Fibroids and Pregnancy
Fibroids and Pregnancy

The relationship between fibroids and pregnancy is complicated. Often, fibroids prevent a woman from becoming pregnant or cause difficulties during pregnancy. On the other hand, infertility results from some treatments for fibroids, and pregnancy becomes impossible.

In general, women who wish to have children are advised to look into myomectomy first since it is the traditional therapy for those who do not want to lose their fertility. Unfortunately, in some cases, the number, size, or position of the fibroids make myomectomy difficult, and a hysterectomy must be performed instead. Since UFE also spares the uterus, many experts consider it a good option for some women. Fibroids may recur after myomectomy and UFE may  be a good option in that case.

Several studies of fibroids and pregnancy have reported cases in which women have become pregnant and given birth to healthy babies after undergoing UFE. UFE however, may cause a slightly higher rate of preterm delivery and malpresentation.

In some cases, UFE may be used to shrink large fibroids to make them easier to remove during myomectomy.

Read one woman's story of how this combination technique led to a dream come true when she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Each case is individual, and risks and benefits of all treatments must be discussed in detail with your doctors.
